Who is your coach?
Welcome to Special Needs GPS, your personal guidance system for creating a satisfying life for your child with special needs and for your family.
Hello, I'd like to introduce myself.
My name is Paula Lugar.
I am trained as a Special Needs Life Coach through The International Association for Life Quality. I come to special needs coaching with over 35 years experience as an occupational therapist working with families whose children have been diagnosed with autism, Down syndrome, William's syndrome, cerebral palsy, spinal muscular atrophy, spina bifida, genetic conditions, achondroplasia and many others. I decided to become a coach because coaching can accomplish more than therapy.
That may surprise you. Therapy takes kids apart. The occupational therapist works on fine motor skills, self-help skills, sensory processing, and some learning activities. The physical therapist works on big muscles, walking, strength, and range of motion. The speech therapist works on communication skills and the ability to pronounce words correctly and put words together to make sentences. Therapists work on skills: self-help skills, movement, communication. Who works with children? Coaches work with children.
I want to work with your child as a person with abilities who is part of a family. I want to work with your family because it is your family that creates the loving environment that nurtures success. The relationship between your child and your family can be the source of power and energy or the source of stress. Life will never be free of stress, but the stress can be balanced by fun, opportunity, and success.
I come to coaching with life experience that allows me to appreciate how hard some days can be. My husband and I have faced challenges. We've lost our dreams and we've dreamed new dreams. We planned to have children, but discovered we couldn't. Later my husband faced serious health challenges that continue to require him to use oxygen and an IV medication every hour of the day. Despite the challenges, we celebrate the success of being married for over 30 years and of being alive. We live in western Wisconsin where a creek runs across the front of our property and our border collies can race my husband's electric golf cart. It's the kind of place we would go on vacation, but it's were we live every day. Life can be happy even when there are clouds in the sky.
Besides my training in occupational therapy, I have a master's degree. My focus for my master's degree was the "individual in Society." I learned to apply principles of physics to developmental problems. It changed how I practice occupational therapy. More importantly, it changed how I see the world. When I find myself in a box that sets limits, I figure out how to get out of the box and create opportunity. That's what I offer you. We will search outside the box of dis-ability in order to find ability and create opportunity.
As your coach, I will listen to your story. We will identify what you want to accomplish, what resources you have, what actions will help you achieve your goals. We'll review what has worked in the past and what hasn't worked so well. We will develop goals and a timeline for achieving them. We'll work together to assure you and your child a satisfying life.
